Health and safety professionals would have the necessary expertise and competence to carry out the work they are being asked to do. This would normally mean they are professionally qualified, have the required experience and full membership of a relating professional body.

Qualifications

In the UK there are 2 recognised qualification routes to become a health and safety practitioner. Gaining a Diploma with either organisation will lay excellent foundations for further study and development.

• National Examination Board in Occupational Health and Safety - NEBOSH Diploma

• British Safety Council - Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (formally Diploma in Safety Management)

Both organisations also offer a general Certificate which is an entry level qualification. The certificate is aimed at employees who have responsibilities to carry out specific health and safety duties as part of their main job but do not necessary require a full Diploma.

Professional Bodies

The leading bodies for health and safety practitioners in the UK are;-

• Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)

• International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM)

Professional bodies will promote standards of professional competence and offer their members support, development and a chance to network.
